How Far?V 0.9b (2 Jun 94)by James E. Bruckart, M.D.©1994 ZebraSoft How Far? is the first version of a set of PDA tools for pilots and frequent travelers. How Far? sets the user location as the origin and queries for a destination. Only a part of the city name or airport idendifier needs to be entered. Given two valid locations, the program calculates the distance (Great Circle distance) and initial heading between the two locations. The program displays an approximate course line on the map. Currently, the program includes 65 locations (generally major cities). Great Circle distances may not be accurate for very short trips. Some course calculations include a "Number too small" to complete the calculation. In this case, the origin and destination locations can be exchanged and the reciprocal heading (180 degrees opposite the desired heading) is displayed. Projecting circular coordinates on a flat U.S. map results in displayed city locations that are several pixels away from their true locations.Planned enhancements:1. Ability to designate locations by tapping on the map.2. Addition of all cities with an airport in the U.S. (I currently have 5000 locations available, but the Newton Toolkit will not compile this large a project data file on my Macintosh).3. Ability to print, beam, and fax the program information.Requests:1. Bug reports (other than inaccuracies of the course line on the map, cities not included in the program, or "Number too small" for course.2. Human interface preferences: - Do you like Pop-up messages that go away with a tap anywhere on the screen or would you prefer a close box? - Did you find the "About" information when you tapped the title of the app? Is this desirable or would you prefer an "ABOUT" button?3. Price - What is an appropriate price point for Newton software? How much would you expect to pay for shareware vs. distributed programs for the Newton. What features do you expect in a certain price range.4. Programmers - When using a protoExpando for text input, how do you keep non-editable lines from expanding (note distance and course lines expand even though they do not allow input)?James E.
