If not, please read the DETAILED INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS below. To install Newt Tools, make sure to install the ButtonBar.pkg and Scroll.pkg files to the Internal memory store. While it is recommended that you install all of the Newt Tools software to the internal store, you should at least have the ButtonBar and Scroll packages installed in internal memory. ---->DETAILED INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Start the Newton Package Installer or Newton Backup Utility or any other third party application which supports package downloading of Newton OS 2.0 packages. 2. Click on the Install Package button. 3. Select the ButtonBar file from the Newt Tools Demo folder. The ButtonBar file is located in the "Install to Internal if Possible" folder. 4. Tap the Extras Drawer on your Newton to open it and then tap the Card icon. ( 5. Make sure "Store new info and packages on this card" is NOT checked. Tap the Close button. NOTE: You will be installing the ButtonBar and ScrollMenus packages to the internal memory. If you have more than one Card, you can avoid the problem of having your Newton repeatedly ask you to re-insert your PC Card when you try to remove it by installing the ButtonBar and ScrollMenus packages to the internal memory. If you do not have enough free space to install the ButtonBar and ScrollMenus packages to the internal memory, remember to move the ButtonBar and ScrollMenus packages to the internal memory before removing your Card. 6. Tap the Connection icon. Tap the type of connection you are using and then tap the Connect button. 7. Repeat steps 3 and 6 (not 3 through 6) again for the Scroll.pkg file. NOTE: If you do not have a PC Card, you will want to skip steps 10 and 11. 8. From your Macintosh package downloading program, click on the download package icon. 9. Select a tool package from within the "Install On Card" folder. 10. Tap the lower half of the Extras Drawer icon on your Newton to open the System Extras and then tap the Card icon. 11. Tap the type of connection you are using and then tap the Connect button. 13. Repeat steps 8 through 13 for the remaining Newt Tools packages. -------------------------- IMPORTANT STORAGE ISSUES -------------------------- As a Newton rule, you should keep 10-20% of your storage space free to prevent "out of space" messages when performing moving, duplicating, etc. AVOID FILLING YOUR INTERNAL AND CARD STORES TO THEIR CAPACITIES. --------------------- IMPORTANT SPEED TIPS --------------------- The following speed tips will help you gain faster performance from your Newton and your usage of Newt Tools. 1. Use folders to categorize your applications. The speed of the PackTool is increased when there are fewer applications to view at any one time. 2. Use the View settings within the PackTool and SoupTool to control the display of information within each application. The fewer items checked within the View Specifications, the faster your display will perform. 3. In low heap memory situations with PackTool and SoupTool, try reducing the number of display settings in the View Specifcations dialog. 4. Double-tapping the ButtonBar shrinks it. Repeat the procedure to expand it. --------------------------- IMPORTANT PACKTOOL NOTES --------------------------- 1. Move your packages to the destination folder where you would like for them to reside and then freeze them. If you do not, thawed packages will return to their originally frozen folder location when closed. 2. Launching frozen Newt Tools utilities from the NT menu at the bottom of a Newt Tools application will not re-freeze the tool. To avoid this problem, leave the Newt Tools utilities thawed, launch all Newt Tools utilities from the ButtonBar, or re-freeze them later. ------------------------- IMPORTANT MEMTOOL NOTES ------------------------- Some applications may not attach a proper application signature to the soups they create. Be aware that soups listed in the Orphaned Soups listing may be listed as orphaned, but may actually be relevant soups. To determine the validity, check the application signature at the end of the soup name to see if the application name is being displayed. When an orphaned soup is in question, it is better to leave it unchecked than to accidentally delete it. It is recommended that you back up your Newton using the Newton Backup Utility before performing any Newt Tools utility operations. -------------------------- IMPORTANT SOUPTOOL NOTES -------------------------- When moving very large soups, such as your names soup to a different store, you may run out of heap memory. Try using the Clean Up Heap Memory function from the ButtonBar, freeze a number of applications, or restart your Newton prior to moving very large soups. -------------------------- IMPORTANT SOUPEDIT NOTES -------------------------- Avoid using a high number setting for the Level menu when viewing very large soups to avoid running out of heap memory. ================================= ORDERING INFORMATION (DOMESTIC) ================================= Newt Tools can be purchased directly from Ascribe Software for $49.95 plus shipping and handling.
