FlightRecorder 1.5TutorialThank you for trying FlightRecorder. By the end of this tutorial, you will have personally tried all of FlightRecorder's main features. We feel that by doing this tutorial, you will understand why FlightRecorder is such a useful product and how it will be a valuable part of your Newton software library.Tools Needed:* A Newton with OS 2.0 (required) with FlightRecorder 1.5 installed.Let's Get StartedGrab your Newton and let's get started.1. First Open the Date Book by tapping on the Dates icon silk-screened at the bottom of your Newton. This will open the Date Book.2. Tap on the "Show" button and select the "Day" option if it is not already selected.3. Now tap on the "New" button. You will notice there is a new choice in the list of available options. FlightRecorder adds the "Flight" option. Go ahead and select it now!4. Once you have selected the "Flight" option, a flight slip will be displayed. Here is where you will enter all of your flight information. At the top is a list of all of the meetings and events you have scheduled for the selected day. Beneath the list of already scheduled meetings is a time bar. This time bar shows graphically all of the meetings you have scheduled for the selected day, graying out all of the time in which you have something already scheduled.5. Now tap on the "Airline" popup. FlightRecorder allows you to indicate those companies in your Name File which are Airlines. Since this is the first time you are using Flight Recorder, it is not aware of any airlines in your Name File. So select the "Add Airlines to popup" option from the popup. At this time a name picker will be displayed. Now go ahead and check all of those companies which are airlines. You can edit this list at any time but for now, check at least one airline. If you do not have any airlines currently in your Name File, tap the "New" button at the bottom of the name picker and fill in all of the appropriate information. Then be sure to check it in the list. Now close the name picker.6. Tap on the "Airline" popup again. You will now notice that all of the airlines you checked in the name picker screen are now included in the list. Please select the airline which you are flying for this flight. You can also just write the name of the airline in the field. However, just writing the name of the airline will not link the meeting to the company.7. Now fill in the flight number.8. Now tap on the Depart popup. Here you will be able to:* Select a city which you have previously travelled to.* Select a new city from a city picker containing major cities throughout the world.* Add a new city.Since you have not used FlightRecorder before, there will be no frequently travelled cities in the popup from which to choose. So, select the "Other" option from the popup. Notice a convenient city picker is displayed. Select the city in which you are departing from. If the city you chose is not known to have an airport, you will be notified of this and asked if you are sure you wish to depart from that city. Also, if you chose a city with more than one airport, you will be given the option to select from which one you would like to depart. If the city you are departing from does to appear in the list, close the city picker and select the "Edit Cities" option. Then go ahead add tap the "New button and enter your new city.Once you schedule a flight, both the departure and arrival cities will be added to the list of recently travelled cities. This is convenient in scheduling return flights or flights to and from cities you travel frequently.9. Now tap on the first "At" field below the "Depart" popup and enter the time your flight will depart. ALWAYS enter the times as they appear on your flight ticket. Your flight ticket has times listed in "local time." It is important you enter both the departure and arrival times as their appear on your flight ticket. This will allow FlightRecorder to compute the flight duration and alert you when you have landed in a city which has a different time zone than the one you departed from.Note: You can also enter your flight time by drawing a line (also called "gesturing") over the time bar starting at the departure time and lifting the pen on the arrival time. Although flights rarely start and end on an even time, this will allow you to enter the flight time fairly close to its scheduled times. Then if you wish, you can tap on the departure and arrival time fields to set the time exactly as it appears on your flight ticket.9. Now tap on the Arrive popup and follow the same steps to choose the city at which you are scheduled to arrive.10. Tap on the "At" field below the "Arrive" popup and enter the time your flight will arrive. FlightRecorder allows you to enter an arrival time which falls in the next day if this is necessary. Since the Newton does not allow meetings to continue past midnight, FlightRecorder will break the flight into two flights and link them together. Whenever you edit either flight, FlightRecorder will display it to you as a single flight.11. Before we save the flight, let's take a look at some of the additional features in the flight slip.Tap on the "Extra" button. An additional screen of information is displayed. The computed duration of the flight and the distance between cities are displayed. It will also display the frequent flyer number associated with the selected airline (see how to enter a frequent flyer number below). In this screen you can enter, your seat number, frequent flyer miles, confirmation number, flight fare and any food served on the flight. Now close the Extra Info screen.12. Tap on the small icon of the bell. The bell can appear as a filled in bell or a hollow bell. FlightRecorder honors the Date Book preference which states the minutes prior to a meeting an alarm will be sounded. If you have chosen to turn this Date Book preference on, the bell will appear initially filled in representing that an alarm will be set if the flight is saved. Tapping on the small bell icon allows you to edit that alarm. Remember that alarms are ALWAYS relative to the departure time of the flight. Now close the Set Alarm screen.13. The icon of the piece of paper with the turned corner will display the meeting notes when tapped. Go ahead and tap it if you wish to see the note screen. Close it when you are done entering any notes you might wish to make.14. Let's save your first flight using FlightRecorder. Tap on the Close box in the bottom right hand corner of the flight slip. At this time, all of the information you have entered will be saved as a meeting in your Newton's Date Book. The flight saved is in all respects a Newton meeting but has additional information associated with it that FlightRecorder allows you to view and edit.Note: Since flights are in essence meetings, any program which supports the built-in meetings will also support flights. Now notice the icon of the plane in your Date Book. Neat! That indicates that it is a plane flight. Tapping on the plane icon will open the flight slip and allow you to edit and view any of the information you originally entered for the flight.IMPORTANT: FlightRecorder has a very useful feature which may not be apparent until you use FlightRecorder for a flight which spans more than one time zone. FlightRecorder will alert you approximately 5 minutes after the time you were scheduled to arrive at your destination if the destination is in a different time zone than from the one you departed from. FlightRecorder will then give you the option to adjust your Newton's clock. It will allow you to do it now, later or never. If you choose now, the Newton's clock will be updated as well as your Newton's location. If you choose later, FlightRecorder adds a choice to the Newton's "pending events" list at the top of your Newton (star menu). The first time you encounter this feature, you will absolutely love it!15. Now let's say you need to schedule a series of connecting flights. FlightRecorder assists you by adding an option to the flight slip's action button. Tapping on the action button (small envelope icon) within the flight slip and selecting the "Connecting Flight" option will allow you to save your current flight and create a new flight departing from the city in which you are scheduled to arrive at for the current flight. It will also pre-fill the airline.16. The very last feature to describe in FlightRecorder is the ability to add a frequent flyer number for a company card. To see this feature, tap on the Names icon. Now select an company from your Name File and then tap the "Add" button. Notice the new "Frequent Flyer No." choice. Taping it will allow you to enter an alpha-numeric number. This is then displayed in the Extra Info screen from the flight slip if you select that airline for your flight. That brings us to the end of this tutorial. Thank you for taking time to see how FlightRecorder will make your Newton a more powerful tool. This tutorial could not cover all of the aspects of FlightRecorder so we encourage you to continue to investigate the product. Thank you once again. We hope we can be of service to you in the future.-the folks at SilverWARE
