Loved1.pkg A desk clock/photo/recording of your significant other.ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑInstalling You can install this using the Newton Connection Kit or another package utility (such as LunaTech Research's PDA Package Downloader). After installing on your Newton, click on its icon. Right at the moment, you'll see Lum (from Urusei Yatsura). See ÒCustomizingÓ for info on changing that. Loved1 takes up 200 bytes of heap space. The freeware version is about 32K; custom versions may be more or less depending on the picture and sound.ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑUsing Loved1 Tapping on the picture will play a little recording of Lum saying ÒDarling.Ó See ÒCustomizingÓ for info on changing that. The clock shows am/pm or 24 hour mode depending on your locale. It only updates every fifteen seconds, or when it's opened, or when the power comes back on if it was sleeping. I figure that's close enough for most people. You need higher accuracy, call the time signal. The close box works as expected.ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑCustomizing You can use this ÒfreewareÓ Loved1-- the Lum picture & sound-- as you wish. Give it to friends, upload it to Web sites or BBSes (as long as you include this ReadMe file-- see ÒDistributionÓ), keep it without paying me a dime! It's meant as a desk clock, so keep your Newton plugged in and keep Loved1 up when you're not doing anything else with it. However, you can also buy a customized version from the author. It'll display your special loved one, and play a recording of his/her/their/its voice! Best of all, it's reasonably priced. Here's how. Send me, via USmail, a good B&W photograph of your loved one and a cassette with the sound of their voice. Try to keep the picture simple and the sound short; otherwise the package will be real large. I'll digitize both of them and write a customized version of Loved1 just for you. I'll send it back on a Macintosh or IBM-formatted disk, whichever you specify. The price for this is $15. Or, send me (again via USmail) a disk, either format, with a digitized picture of your loved one and a digitized sample of their voice. Picture format should be PICT, GIF, or JPEG for best results; for the sound, a System 7 SND file is best, but I can take WAV files or most other formats if you can't convert it yourself. Remember that your Newton screen is 240x320 (for MP100 owners, 240x336) and can only display black and white; cropping the digital picture ahead of time is a good idea. (As a side note, the Newton is very good at converting sixteen-color grayscale images to B&W, so that should be the maximum bit depth of your picture.) There's about 4 pixels on a side used for the window edge, so 232x316 would be a good size to shoot for. If you make it slightly smaller or larger, no worries; the image centers automatically. The sound should be sampled at 11 KHz or 22 KHz. Cost is half the normal price: $7.50! Wow! Also tell me where you want the clock display: lower left, upper right, or upper left. If you don't say, I'll decide on a place that blocks as little of the picture as possible. Summary: Send a check or money order for $7.50 or $15. (I can't take credit cards, and cash through the mail is always a bad idea.) Include a disk with the data or a photo and cassette tape. Tell me whether you want the disk in Mac or IBM format. Let me know your eMail address, in case there are things I need to ask you. And, of course, let me know your USmail address. ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑA note for NOS 2.0 users While the program supports both portrait and landscape orientations, the picture may not look real good in landscape. Of course, if you get a custom Loved1 and your photo was meant to be viewed in landscape mode, the reverse is true. ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑDistribution The freeware Loved1.pkg may be distributed freely, as long as [1] this ReadMe file is included and [2] no fee is charged for its distribution. Online services which charge a reasonable hourly rate but do not charge for downloads may place it in their libraries. Distributors of CD-ROMs and other software libraries may include it if prior permission is given; write to the author for details. Customized versions may not be distributed unless prior permission is given. Again, ask the author for details. The author has also released, or will release, a number of other small but useful pieces of shareware and freeware. They're uploaded regularly to the usual sites.
