Speed (tm) v1.1---------------------------------------------------------------------copyright 1995 Stand Alone, Inc. & Ben Gottlieb* What's it do?--------------------------------------------------------------------- Speed is a collection of enhancements to the built in Names file. These include: * Fast (usable) filing of names and notes and viewing of folders * Display of email addresses in the Card and Card & Notes views * A variety of methods for quickly accessing the Names file. These are the Scribble window, a pop up menu, and a mini- keyboard. * The ability to tap on a number and have the Newton dial it without having to go through the standard call slip. * A way to set certain default attributes for both the Names file and newly created Name cards. * An increase in the country list that pops up in the Names file. * An adjustable dialing delay for calling card numbers These are all explained in detail below. The main function of Speed is to speed up filing in the Names file (hence the name ;-). Many people have complained that the Newton Names file is quite useful, but they can't file any names in folders, because it takes too long to view a folder (up to 5 minutes if you have several hundred names in your Newton.) Speed will reduce this time so that changing folders only takes a few seconds. Read on for more details...* Requirements--------------------------------------------------------------------- Speed needs Newton Operating system 1.3 or later (it will work on MessagePad 100s, MessagePad 110s, MessagePad 120s, and Marcos, but has not been tested on Original MessagePads or Sharp ExpertPads.) It also needs about 30k of free storage space, and will consume just under 2k of heap.* What's in this archive?--------------------------------------------------------------------- There are four Newton software packages and three text files in this archive. They are: * Speed.txt document you're now reading. 'Nuff said. * Speed.pkg software package you'll install on your Newton. * SA Stuff.pkg a text list of other Stand Alone products * SASReg.pkg software package you'll install on your Newton to enter the password you get when you register speed. * ScrlMenu.txt read me file for Scroll Menus, a shareware extension for the Newton that will let pop up menus scroll off screen. * ScrMnSgl.pkg software package you'll install on your Newton to make pop up menus scroll. This features arrows at the top and bottom of any pop up menu that's too big to fit on screen. * ScrMnDbl.pkg same as above, but the arrows are both at the bottom of the screen. * Register.txt read me file describing the Register software. * Register.pkg software package you can install on your Newton to use Register, which will allow you to pay for Speed via email.* Installing Speed--------------------------------------------------------------------- First off, you must get the Speed software package onto your Newton. You can do this using the Newton Connection Kit (for Mac or Windows), the Newton Package Downloader, or the Newton Package Installer. See the documentaion with each of these for more information on installing packages with them.* Activating Speed--------------------------------------------------------------------- While you don't have to Engage the filing aspect of Speed, most people will want to. Without engaging it, changing folders in names and notes will be no faster than normal. **IMPORTANT: Before engaging Speed, be sure that your Newton is plugged into it's AC adapter, or has a nice, freshly charged set of batteries in it, as the process will consume a good deal of power, and a reset in the middle (due to a power fault) would be bad. Just make sure you're plugged in, and have a few minutes to spend. To engage it, simply go into the Prefs section of the Extras drawer and tap "Speed". Then, near the bottom of your screen you'll see a button marked "Engage". Tap that, and then the area you want to engage (names, notes, or both,) and sit back and wait. The generation of the references Speed uses may take up to 20 minutes. While it's generating them, a small window will appear on screen, informing you of it's progress. Once Speed has been Engaged, your Names file and note pad will work signifigantly faster...just use them as normal, but you won't have to wait as long.* Making more use of Speed--------------------------------------------------------------------- Speed is much more than just a filing enhancement. If you now go to the Names file, you'll notice that all your name cards with email addresses show these addresses in the Card and Card & Notes views. In addition, Speed allows you to customize the start up configuration of your Names file. Returning to the Speed prefs, the "Folder" and "View" pickers will determine which folder and which style (Overview, Card, Card & Notes, or All Info) you Names file will first open to after you restart your Newton. This functionality incorporates both NamesToAllOverview and NameStartup, earlier freeware applications by Stand Alone. There is no need to have these installed when Speed is also installed. Below the start up configuration is a check box labeled "Direct dial numbers when tapping on them". If this is checked, then whenever you tap on a phone number in the Names file (in either the Overview, Card, or Card & Notes views) it will automatically dial the number after a 3 second pause, instead of opening the call slip. If it's unchecked, the call slip will open when you tap on a number. Note that this direct dialing doesn't happen if you tap on a fax number (for obvious reasons.) Below that checkbox is a picker labeled Default Country. This sets which country is entered into the "Country" field of newly created Name cards. It does NOT apply to currently existing name cards. Next comes the Default Card Style picker. This chooses the card style that all newly created Name cards will have (normally set at the bottom of the All Info view.) Again, this does not apply to currently existing name cards. In addition to these configuration options, Speed offers three methods of quickly accessing the Names file. At the top of the window is a check box. This will determine whether to use a mode of quick access or not. Below it is a list of the three quick access options. These are: * Scribble Window When this is selected, tapping the selected half of the names button (see below) will bring up a small window towards the bottom center of your screen. It consists of a small field in which you can enter the first few letters of a name you wish to find (note: this must be the last name or company name, depending on which you have checked as the "sort by" in the card's All Info view.) Above this field is a small check box labeled "Only". If this is checked, than then you enter a sequence of characters and tap the "Go" button (directly below the field,) the card file will show a list of ONLY those Names that start with the sequence. This can be somewhat slow, but is useful to bring up a selective list. To the left of the Go button is a button labeled simply "N". This will create a new name card, and take you to the All Info view for editing it. * Pop up menu If this option is selected, tapping on the names button will open a pop up menu on the left side of the newton screen, listing the letters A to Z, and the word "New". Tapping on one will open the Names file to that letter, and tapping "New" creates a new card, and opens the names file to it. * Mini keyboard When this option is chosen, tapping the names button will open a small keyboard with three rows of letters (a to z). You can tap out the first three letters of a name and the Names file will show that name, just like with the Scribble window. The chosen method will only be used if you tap on the bottom half of the Names button. If you tap on the top half, the Names file will open as normal. To reverse this behavior (ie. top half opens the quick access method and bottom half opens the Names file,) use the set of radio buttons labeled "Use which part of the Names button". Below this set of radio buttons is a check box labeled "Go to overview in Quick Access". If this is checked, than each time you choose a new start letter in Quick Access, the Names file will return to the Overview mode. Otherwise, it will remain in whatever view you were using (Card & Notes, for example.) There's also a picker labeled "Access Dial Delay". This controls the length of time the Newton waits before dialing the access number for long distance carriers after it dials the main number. At the bottom of the window is a button labeled "Countries". This will open a window in which you can set which countries are listed in the pop up menu that appears when you tap on "Country" in the All Info view. If you have too many listed, you may want to install Scroll Menus, as this will let you page through multiple screens of a pop up menu. At the top right of the screen is a small button labeled with an "i". Tapping this will bring up information on how to register Speed or get in touch with us at Stand Alone.* What Else?--------------------------------------------------------------------- Because of the way Speed stores information about your Names cards and Notes, if you synchronize your Newton with a desktop computer, then edit the way names or notes are filed on your computer, and then re-synchronize the two machines, names or notes may be misfiled. Should you do this, simply go into the Speed Prefs and tap on the "Engage" button again (being sure to follow the precautions listed above in "Installing Speed".) Should you ever, for some reason, decide to stop using Speed, make sure to tap the "Disengage" button in Prefs, and then the areas you no longer want to use, before removing it from your Newton. Nothing drastic will happen if you don't, but there will be some wasted space on your Newton or storage card.* Software conflicts--------------------------------------------------------------------- Speed is compatible with almost all software we tested, with two exceptions: QuickNames Pro: QNP must be installed AFTER Speed to gain access to it. Otherwise the two work perfectly well together. NewPage: New notes created with NewPage will not show in the note pad unless you're in "All Notes". We will release an update version of NewPage (the original is not by us) that will work properly with Speed. This only happens when Note Pad Speed is engaged.* It's Shareware--------------------------------------------------------------------- What's this mean? It means that you gotta pay for it if you like it. At the top right of the Prefs screen, right next to the info button, is a count down display. It starts off at 30 days, the trial period for Speed. When it's hits 0, Speed will stop working. You'll still be able to Disengage it. but nothing else will work (the Names file will function as normal, however.) There are instructions for registering accessible via the info button. Please feel free to upload Speed (or any other Stand Alone products) to any locations you may frequent, including both BBS's and internet FTP sites. You can also distribute Speed to all your friends. Just make sure that this read me file is included.* Registering Speed--------------------------------------------------------------------- You have a 30 day trial period in which to examine Speed, during which it will function fully. Should you wish to register, you'll need to do one of the following: * Send us a check for $25 to: Stand Alone, Inc. 1146 Morse Ave., #3C Chicago, IL, 60626, USA * Using CompuServe, GO SWREG and register ID # 6478 * Using Flash Sheridan's Register program (enclosed in the Speed archive) and either NewtonMail (built into the Newton) or Catamount Software's Aloha (shareware, $50, for more info, contact Catamount at info@catamount.com). Open up Register, fill in the application (Speed:SAS), the amount ($25), and your credit card information, and email it. However you register, PLEASE be sure to include an email address (it's not vital, but it will result in MUCH speedier service, no pun intended) and your name, as entered in the Prefs -> Personal section of your Newton. This is used to generate the password we send you to unlock Speed, so it has to be exact. Once you register, you will receive a password from us. To use it, install the SAS Register package (also enclosed in the Speed archive), select "Speed" from the pop up menu at the top, and enter the password. You should get a message confirming the password. You may then remove the SAS Register application from you Newton.* Discounts--------------------------------------------------------------------- Speed is normally $25, but certain discounts apply. If you are a registered user of any other Stand Alone product, you may take $5 off the price. Unfortuneately, this discount is not available on CompuServe, only via Register and check.* Contacting us--------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have any questions regarding Speed, or any other Stand Alone Newton application, please don't hesitate to contact us: Email: internet: info@standalone.com (<-- preferred) AOL: Std Alone eWorld: Gottlb CompuServe: 76342,3057 Phone: Voice: (312) 262-5150 Fax: (312) 262-5148 Regular Mail: Stand Alone, Inc. 1146 Morse Ave., #3C Chicago, IL, 60626, USA * Special Thanks--------------------------------------------------------------------- I'd like to thank the following people for their invaluable assistance in testing Speed: Ashley Barnard Marc Field Jason Grazado Gary Greco Steve Holden Serg Koren Scott Leapman Steve Lewis Hardy Macia Dave Nanian Rudy Nadilo Scott Silverman The members of the Chicago-Illinois Newton Users Group Erik Wiessmann As well as John Parkyn for his assistance with the documentation. * Version History---------------------------------------------------------------------1.1 Sept 12, 1995 Fixed following problems: *cleaned up completely on removal *some email address broke often *dialing uses proper prefixes and codes Added new features: *sped up note pad filing *added info to the status display when dialing *"New" menu item in the pop up menu *control over access code delays 1.0 July 20, 1995 First public release
